A Girl’s Rite (2015)

*TW mention of disordered eating*

Thirty-seven women, twenty daughters, seventeen mothers, sixteen codewords, five countries, one biological process, and twenty insightful—and sometimes awkward—conversations shattering taboos and uniting them all.

It is no question that menstruation is a globally stigmatized subject. However, this stigma is so deeply rooted into so many cultures that talking about periods out loud or in front of others, let alone in front of a camera, seems too humiliating to fathom. It was this, which sparked the creative process of A Girl’s Rite—which refers to both the fact that getting one’s period is often seen as a cultural rite of passage into womanhood, as well as the right to feel empowered by your period.

We brought in daughters and their mothers—together—initiating conversations that many of them never had even in the privacy of their own homes. A Girl’s Rite is the result of those conversations.
